The momentous changes in Russia over the past five years have been a rich source for the study and practice of management. Based on interviews and empirical data collected directly from Russian managers, Business and Management in Russia has been written to provide an understanding of Russian management and business as the country takes the first steps towards a market economy.

Drawing on five years’ collaborative research between Russian and Western management scholars, this major book presents an extensive set of authoritative papers and illustrated case studies. After examining the traditional mindset of the Russian manager, placing managerial traits in historical context and discussing both the position of women managers and the role of management education, the authors focus on the transition period itself, the evolving conditions facing state-owned and private enterprises and the responses of managers. Adopting a Western perspective, the volume concludes with a survey of manufacturing joint ventures, discussion of human resource issues and a comparative analysis of business ethics.

Intended for students, scholars and managers, Business and Management in Russia provides in-depth analyses of Russian culture and history, as they affect managers, and survey results on current managerial attitudes and practice. While focusing on managers and enterprises, the volume also addresses macroeconomic, political, legal and social issues as a context for understanding managerial behaviour.
Critical Acclaim
‘Business and Management in Russia offers truly useful information about managing people in Russia.’
– Robert L. Dilenschneider, Business and the Contemporary World

‘This book is an important contribution for the range and diversity of topics, the experience of the authors and the synergy created from the use of both Western and Russian authors. Sheila Puffer is to be congratulated for preparing a book which will provoke thought and discussion amongst its readership.’
– Malcolm Hill, Loughborough University Business School, UK

‘Essential reading for Western executives moving into the turbulent business scene. It puts current business conditions into a revealing historical context. It offers insightful and realistic advice on a wide range of business topics: especially employee recruitment, training and compensation, business ethics and leadership styles. It mixes the latest research on Russian business with rich cases that bring conditions to life.’
– Paul Lawrence, Harvard University Graduate School of Business Administration, US

‘The shift from pleasing Bolshoi Brother to peddling Bolshoi Macs has led to a rewriting of the handbooks for Russian managers. Sheila Puffer and her colleagues have used interviews, case studies and other down to earth methods to document the changes underway. They have made a pioneering contribution to our understanding of a complex and important issue.’
– Edward B. Fiske, former Education Editor of the New York Times

‘Once again, Sheila Puffer has managed to successfully assemble a collection of articles and case studies that provides Western audiences with a practical understanding of contemporary Russian business and management practices. The book provides a most insightful look into the new Russian manager from a Western perspective.’
– Dr B.J. Bischoff, Indiana Training Exports

‘Puffer and her associates have written a valuable book and their observations are candid and accurate. It would be a mistake to undertake a business venture in Russia without first reading their book, which should also be of great value to those who are involved with developing or delivering training to Russian managers.’
– Thomas A. Carey, Academy of Management Executive
