‘Here are four volumes, whose very publication gives cause for celebration. Simon Clarke and his close collaborator, Peter Fairbrother, both in the Centre for Comparative Labour Studies at the University of Warwick, have been responsible for an adventurous research initiative. Not only has Simon Clarke done a great deal of the translation but has provided penetrating essays at the beginning of each volume, which are of the highest quality. In recognition of this I give him the last word: “If our case studies do nothing else, we hope that they will stand as testimony to the resilience of the Russian labour force in the face of the unholy alliance of Soviet and neo-liberal totalitarianism embodied in the programme of market Bolshevism”’.
